Usui System of Reiki Healing © Phyllis Lei Furumoto and Paul David Mitchell, 1995, revised 2001 Within the dynamic of the four aspects, there is a centerpiece called the Form. This sacred formula has been tested and developed as a dependable, predictable vehicle to take the practitioner deeper into the wisdom of the elements, nurturing the process of healing. There are many belief systems around each element of the form. However, when the belief systems are dropped, the elements that remain are simple and clear. These elements have a dynamic of their own. Each of the elements is critical and each has equal importance. To change or remove one of the elements is to change the dynamic of the System. Four Aspects Healing Technique: The form of practice of the Usui System of Reiki Healing is a hands-on healing technique. Reiki, Universal Life Energy, is channeled through the practitioner's hands for self-treatment or treatment of others. Personal Growth: Giving and receiving Reiki stimulates a process that brings a clearer sense of self, deepening self acceptance, and a growing awareness of one's true self. Self-treatment is the foundation practice of the Usui System. Spiritual Discipline: Inherent in the practice of the form is the possibility of awakening a spiritual practice. We become aware of the sacred in all aspects of our lives. The daily practice leads to a discipline that comes from the personal reward of knowing that as a result of practice, the quality of our relationship with ourselves, to the world outside of ourselves, and to our spirit deepens. Mystic Order: Those who have been initiated in the Usui System and practice it are a community or order of people whose foundation lies in having common experiences rather than holding common beliefs. Reiki and the practice of the Usui System asks us to consider the choices between our need to know and our willingness to surrender to the unknown. This practice of laying on of hands gives us the capacity to tap into the experience of wonder, of mystery, at will. As we include the reality of mystery in our daily lives, our possibilities for change and movement increase proportionally. Nine Elements of Form Initiation: The ritual passed down from Reiki Master to Reiki Master that, when performed with a student, results in the capacity to channel Reiki for self and others. There are four initiations for first degree, one initiation for second degree and one initiation for Reiki Master. Money: This element bridges the material and non-material worlds offering healing for humanity through the power and energy of money. Each step of the Usui System path has a specific monetary fee: $150 US, $500 US, and $10,000 US. These fees are a part of the form and are often the most difficult element for students to reconcile with spiritual practice. This challenges the practitioner to widen the scope of understanding regarding the energy of money and the energetic transmission that occurs when money is exchanged. Symbols: The symbols of the Usui System are energetic keys that access levels of communion with self, others and the mystery of life. While the symbols may have power of their own, it is through the relationship created by the initiation, instruction, and use that the value comes to the student. Treatment: The form of treatment, both for self and others, is the laying on of hands in a specific sequence and positions. Treatments are the foundation practice of the form. Through the treatments, self knowledge and self confidence are gained, revealing more of the mysteries of the other elements. Oral Tradition: Oral tradition is energetic transfer and teaching through direct contact and presence of the Reiki Master with the student. The energetic transfer happens though teaching the form of treatments, initiation, passing on the principles, telling the history, answering questions, and being with the students in the class. The master communicates the essence and the integrity of the System to the student. Spiritual Lineage: The carrier of the spiritual lineage is connected with the essence of the Usui System and imbues the System with the challenge of a living human being as a carrier of a living system. The Spiritual Lineage is separate and distinct from the master lineage. The spiritual lineage of the Usui System today is Mikao Usui, Chujuro Hayashi, Hawayo Takata and Phyllis Furumoto. History: The history tells the origin of the Usui System of Reiki Healing and its nurturing to the present day. This story offers a glimpse of the key events and personalities of those who have carried the lineage. It also gives us a mythology, metaphorical teachings about the situations we meet in our every day practice of Reiki. This history is shared in Reiki classes as part of the Oral Tradition. Just for today, do not worry Just for today, do not anger Honor your parents, teachers and elders Earn your living honestly Show gratitude to every living thing Form of Classes: The class form is best presented in a way that supports and models the simplicity of the practice. There are two degree or levels in the Usui System of Reiki Healing. They are First Degree (or Level I) and Second Degree (or Level II). First Degree Reiki Class (Level I) The first degree class is taught by a Reiki Master in four sessions of 2-3 hours duration. Ideally this is done in one session per day over four days. The class consists of: Initiations (one per session) Sharing the definition/description of the Usui System of Natural Healing Sharing the History Teaching the treatment form a. Self treatment (full treatment) b. Treatment of others (full treatment) c. Treatment of Injury Practice Questions, answers, and sharing Fee of $150 US given by student Second Degree Reiki Class (Level II) The Second Degree class is offered to students who have taken the first degree class, have had some months of committed practice, and feel drawn to take this next class. A session to introduce and teach the students the three symbols One initiation A session or two to teach the use of the three symbols A time for practice Questions and sharing Fee of $500 US given by the student
